Zheng Donghui originally did not know what to paint, nor how to paint it. After two months at the studio, he concluded that drawing butterflies offered him a sense of serenity. While drawing at the studio in the daytime, Donghui is already imagining how he will continue drawing at home in the evening. His butterflies symbolise freedom, development and transformation. It is therefore fitting that his creations appear to become increasingly freer and more agile.
Donghui’s father passed away and his mother is bedridden, which means that he spends a lot of time at work. He cleans public toilets for a living. As soon as he gets the chance, he heads outside in the hope of seeing a butterfly. His favourite topic of conversation is ‘his’ butterflies, and he is constantly asking everyone whether they have perhaps seen a butterfly, in the hope to catch a glimpse of his favorite inspiration.
