Shen van der Knaap uses black and white ink to create convincing illusions of space and plasticity. His work always moves beyond being a lacklustre representation of the visible reality. The subtle distortions deliberately included in his work add extra intrigue. He focuses heavily on realistic depictions and also has a keen interest in constructions, perspective and specific details – for example, of buildings or complicated machines such as printing presses.
