Niu Niu

Niu Niu starts by creating a framework in pen, before diligently filling the entire page with complementary shapes and figures. She often repeats shapes, almost as mirror images. Her works frequently depict a cross section of the human body; she produces scannerlike images of the diaphragm or a section of brain.

When Niu arrived at the studio, she spent four days working on four paintings on the subject of ‘suffocation’. Each new painting depicted a subsequent phase of the process of suffocation. Once she had completed the series, she felt reborn. Two days later, Niu reported being able to feel again
