Mies van der Perk is fond of televised images of people playing sport, dancing or performing music. While watching the television, she quickly draws these figures on small sheets of paper in pencil, graphic pen or drawing pen. Mies returns to develop some of her drawings on canvas or high-quality drawing paper using acrylic, ink and water colours. Leafing through her portfolios, one can easily chart her changing style as she constantly sought the form that best expressed her emotions.
It is a remarkable process of development, and a process that brought her great success in later life. In her own words: ‘The Herenplaats creative studio has an international reputation. It was here that I received recognition for the first time in my life. I’m turning 78 and have too many talents to already pass away. There is so much I still want to make’.
