Jorma Pihl was a dairy farmer, owning a large stock of cattle. In 1995 he began using a chainsaw to cut wooden tulips and hepaticas of two metres high as decorations for the gate-posts at the entrance to his family farm.
He began making smaller sculptures later. His favourite figure is the crane, of which he made over one thousand. All in all he created seventy species of animals, especially horses and birds. Due to his declining health, he now concentrates on smaller sculptures. His work is stored in one of the farm buildings next to his home.
