There is a dearth of information concerning Gottfried Aeschlimann. Married, he worked in a factory, he is interned in the psychiatric hospital of Waldau, close to Bern, from 1908 until his death in 1930. Research carried out by the Collection de l’Art Brut has added to the identification of the works by Gottfried Aeschlimann. Jean Dubuffet most likely brought back his works from his tour of Switzerland in 1945 on which he had met Dr. Walter Morgenthaler in Bern. In a letter from 1948 Dubuffet thanked Professor Wyrsch, a psychiatrist in Waldau, “for the documents obtained […] with regard to several sick persons” at the time.
