We have very little information about the life and work of this creator. Round about 1948, Fernand Costa, then around forty, is one of a number of patients cared for in the psychiatric hospital of Ville-Évrard. Drawing delicately colored stylized banknotes, he donates several examples of his work to Jean Dubuffet between 1948 and 1950.
Jean Dubuffet met Fernand Costa and some other patients during his visit to the Ville-Évrard hospital and received six of his works from him. A few months later Costa presented Dubuffet with a further seven works. Dubuffet confirmed his interest in Costa’s creations by buying seven new works from him. The entire set is still part of the Collection de l’Art Brut.
