Dave Bastiaens begins by creating improvised shapes using black cardboard, before developing these creations into faces. He enjoys working with acrylic paint, taking pleasure from its substance and permanence. Twice a week, Dave visits a day centre where he draws and paints. He also sets to work in his modest room at home. He believes that it is important to see different faces for his painting, and the faces of people with a lot on their plate fascinate him the most, around town, at the market or in the shopping centre. He always picks a good observation point, perhaps in a doorway or on a bench.
