Religion plays a major role in Chen Baogui’s works. His art radiates a sense of mysticism, as if pervaded by a supernatural power. Baogui himself has a strong perception of this power, it supports him and gives him hope for a better future. He hears God talking to him. ‘I found my faith seven years ago’, he states with conviction. Baogui enjoys drawing, but is not always able to attend the studio due to his epileptic fits. When he is able to visit the studio, people are amazed at what he produces. His works Crucified Little Muppet and Gourd have made particularly lasting impressions.
