Half november organiseerde Dolhuys | museum van de geest twee seminars in St. Petersburg om kennis en kunde te delen op het gebied van inclusieve educatieve programma’s. De kennisuitwisseling is onderdeel van het project Museum 15/24.
Het Dolhuys deelt in dit project haar ervaringen op het gebied van museumeducatie; het overkoepelende thema hierbij is inclusiviteit. Het doel van dit project is om musea aantrekkelijker te maken voor jongeren met special needs, onder wie ook jongeren met een psychische kwetsbaarheid, in de leeftijd van 15 – 24 jaar. Met onze eigen VTS-expert Liesbeth Water en onze collega’s van Samen Sterk Zonder Stigma hebben we 160 Russische museumprofessionals opgeleid.
Dinsdag 12 november stond in het teken van stigmatisering. Ambassadeur en ervaringsdeskundige Nynke Mulder gaf de museumprofessionals een Stigma Awareness Training en vertelde over haar persoonlijke ervaringen met depressiviteit en haar opnames in een kliniek. Zij heeft aan den lijve ervaren hoe het voelt om er niet bij te horen. De belangrijkste sleutel tot inclusie: écht contact maken met mensen van wie de geest anders werkt dan ‘normaal’. “Dat vermindert vooroordelen”, aldus Mulder. Directeur Gerdien Rabbers van Samen Sterk zonder Stigma hield een theoretisch verhaal over wat stigma precies is en benadrukte vooral het belang van openheid over psychische aandoeningen onder overheidspersoneel. “Daarmee vervullen ze een voorbeeldfunctie. Dat leidt tot destigmatisering.”
Op woensdag 13 november deelde Liesbeth Water, Master of Education in Arts, theoretische kennis over de Visual Thinking Strategy (VTS), een educatieve methode die mensen leert open waar te nemen, te onderzoeken en te luisteren naar elkaar door naar kunstwerken te kijken. ’s Middags brachten de museumprofessionals de theorie in praktijk tijdens een pop up-expositie. Liesbeth Water benadrukte waarom VTS bij uitstek geschikt is voor jongeren met special needs. “Het accent ligt op de kunstbeleving en niet op kennisoverdracht. Er is geen goed of fout. Dat is heel belangrijk voor hun gevoel van eigenwaarde.” aldus Liesbeth Water.
Op donderdag 14 november deelde de Nederlandse delegatie haar ervaringen tijdens het VIII International Cultural Forum in St. Petersburg, het grootste culturele congres van Rusland met maar liefst 35.000 deelnemers uit 96 landen. In 2020 zullen we ons programma voortzetten en jongeren daadwerkelijk laten deelnemen aan ons inclusieve educatieve programma.
Museum 15/24 is onderdeel van Creative Twinning – een internationaal programma van de Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (RVO). Het project wordt mede mogelijk gemaakt door het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken. Het is een initiatief van de Hermitage Amsterdam, de Hermitage Museum XXI Century Foundation en het Dolhuys | museum van de geest, dat wordt ondersteund door de Hermitage St. Petersburg.

‘Actual contact reduces prejudice’
In November, Dolhuys | museum of the mind organized two seminars in St. Petersburg with which they shared their best practices regarding inclusive educational programmes. The State Hermitage and the Hermitage VII Century Foundation invited Dolhuys | museum of the mind to come to St. Petersburg as part of the Museum 15/24 project.
Dolhuys | museum of the mind shares it’s experiences with museum education; the overall theme being inclusivity, specifically Neurodiversity. The Museum 15/24 project aims at facilitating museum visits for youths between the ages of 15 and 24, among whom, youths with special needs. With our very own VTS-expert Liesbeth Water and our colleagues of Strong Together without Stigma (Samen Sterk zonder Stigma), we’ve managed to train 160 Russian museum professionals.
Tuesday, November 12th, Russian museum professionals, underwent the Dolhuys Stigma Awareness Training. Ambassador and trainer with lived experience Nynke, told the audience about her own personal struggles with mental health and the stigma she felt. She has personally experienced what it feels like not to belong. According to Mulder the key to inclusivity is “having actual contact with people whose mind works differently from those of the masses”. Director of Strong Together without Stigma, Gerdien Rabbers, took the audience on a theoretical journey; she emphasized the importance of being open about mental health for government staff – she believes they serve as an example to many “which leads to destigmatization”.
On Wednesday November 13th, Liesbeth Water, Master of Education in Arts, shared her extensive knowledge about Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS). Together, we believe that VTS is the best way to teach youths and adults alike to be perceptive, curious and to listen to one another while looking at art. In the afternoon, we took the theory into practice in our very own pop-up exposition. Liesbeth once again emphasized why we feel that VTS is the best form of museum education for youths. “It’s all about experiencing art, not about knowledge about art. There is no right or wrong. Not making it about right or wrong or about knowledge in general is extremely important for the youths’ self-esteem”.
On Thursday November the 14th, the Dutch delegation shared their experiences during a round table discussion at the VIII International Cultural Forum in St. Petersburg, the biggest cultural congress in the Russian Federation with over 35.000 attendees from 96 countries. During this round table we were proud to reveal that we will come back to St. Petersburg in 2020 to proceed with our program and work on facilitating museum visits for youths with special needs in Russian museums.
